Tetris (NES)

Introduction

My first review is going to be about one of my favourite games of all time: Tetris for the NES. Before I start I will explain the Tetris basics for the people you don't know it already. You have a playing field where shapes consisting of four blocks fall down one by one. You can place the blocks on the field. For making vertical lines out of the falling blocks you get points. These points are needed in order to obtain a high score. Simple, neh?

The origin of my addiction

I remember going to the store with my dad, brother and sister. We already decided to buy Tetris. It was going to be the first game we purchased after we bought a NES (excluding the standard Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt). I don't remember why we decided upon buying it, but I have never regretted it! This was the start of my Tetris addiction.

Let's play Tetris!

In the A-mode of the game you can play an endless game, without a target number of lines to get. However, the speed of the falling blocks increases after a certain number of lines is made. So the longer you played the more difficult it became to make lines and thus score points.

A nice feature of the game was that in the B-mode you got to see animations if you completed making 25 lines. The faster you let the blocks drop the cooler the animations would be. The ultimate animation of course is the one were Nintendo characters are making music and dancing around!

The graphics were OK, but that wasn't the key factor here. It was the gameplay that kept me coming back for more, along with the catchy music :).

Conclusion

I know a lot of people nowadays think that Tetris is kind of a lame game, but it still has something that a lot of games these days don't have: simple gameplay, and incredible depth at the same time. Furthermore, it is accessible to a wide audience. Anyone can pick up and play the game.

So what are you waiting for? Search for a version of Tetris and go play!
